Wheelchair Specifications

Amtrak trains accommodate most wheelchairs in use today, provided they meet the ADA definition of a "common" wheelchair. Dimensions: The chair should not exceed 30 inches (76 centimeters) wide, 48 inches (122 centimeters) long and 2 inches (5 centimeters) of ground clearance. Weight: The weight limit for an occupied wheelchair is 600 pounds (273 kilograms). Manual and battery powered: We permit both manually operated and battery powered wheelchairs that meet the above limits.

To make reservations for wheelchair space, an accessible seat or an accessible bedroom (available on overnight trains only), or if you have special needs that require assistance, select from the options below to help us best serve you. Reservations are limited to one adult passenger with special needs and one adult companion for one-way and round-trip train travel only. Accessible space is limited on each train. I have reduced mobility

At many Amtrak stations, courtesy wheelchairs are available for passengers who need assistance moving around within the station and to/from the boarding platform. At these stations, Amtrak employees are available to help you.

Amtrak trains accommodate most wheelchairs in use today, provided they meet the ADA definition of a common wheelchair. If you travel with your own wheelchair, be sure to understand the wheelchair requirements before making reservations.

If you have reduced mobility or travel with a mobility aid (e.g., cane, walker, crutches, etc.) and need assistance before boarding your train, Amtrak employees are available to help you within the station.
